Storytelling and Bookmaking

We are partnering with the Morgan Library this year to create illuminated manuscripts with gold leaf and hand mixed paints. Here is my planning process. This is based on a story I have been brainstorming for years: I Hate Birds.

My goal is to do more work this year with my students. Here is what we did with the art club this week. I tried to teach them about shading to make objects pop out.

I decided to be illustrative and a tiny bit conceptual. I went with a lightbulb and light as a feather.

Black and White Still-Life Drawing

This is my still-life scanned in grayscale and color.

I made my students use hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling so I did as well (mine is a little weak on the stippling,) but I would have loved to blend it a bit. (We're doing blending later in the year.)





I'm always interested in looking at what the computer does to art.

Collage Drawing

This is my American Dream Collage drawing. My students are doing an amazing job with this assignment they just aren't as fast as I am :) It's not 100% finished, but close enough to post the photo of it.

Paper Garbage Series

I know I could take this much farther, but this is what I have done in the past year.





Everytime I see a crinkled piece of paper I envision a whole gallery full of drawings, and works of art based on them. Now, I just have 100 more works to make! Then I have to find a gallery that would be interested :)

Astronaut Adventures

I like it better with the color. I know that I should change the color based on which planet he is on, but I really just wanted to get something new up.

More Narrative

I hope it is clear what is happening. I know my perspective is a bit off on the faller and the tripper, so I have to work on that a bit. I was trying to use foreshortening to make it look like the faller is coming closer to the viewer, but he just looks like he should be WAY taller than the other guy. I need some work!
